Our expedition begins at dawn from Delhi as we drive towards Shimla, the capital city of Himachal Pradesh. Along the way, we pass through rural landscapes before gradually ascending into the mountains. We reach Shimla by afternoon and proceed to our luxurious stay at Taj Theog, Narkanda.
Located a short drive from Shimla, Narkanda is a peaceful mountain retreat that turns into a skiing hub during winters. After a grand welcome, we enjoy a relaxing high-tea session and spend the rest of the evening at leisure.
The next morning marks the beginning of a spectacular scenic drive to Sangla. Along the way, we cross the iconic Karcham Dam, pass through the Kinnaur Gate, and navigate thrilling cliff-hanger sections carved into the mountains.
Upon arrival in Sangla, we check in to our riverside hotel in Batseri Village, located along the banks of the Baspa River. The evening is reserved for relaxation, enjoying local cuisine, and soaking in breathtaking views from the comfort of your room.
After breakfast, we head towards Kalpa with a short yet memorable stop at Hindustan Ka Akhri Dhaba in Chitkul. Known for having the cleanest air in India, Chitkul is the last inhabited village on the historic Indo-Tibet trade route.
Nestled in the Sutlej River valley near Reckong Peo, Kalpa offers panoramic views of the Kinnaur Kailash range. We visit the famous <>Suicide Point, a dramatic cliff offering stunning vistas of the valley below, followed by a visit to the culturally significant 3000-year-old Kalpa Monastery.
By evening, we reach Kalpa and check into a cozy Tibetan-style hotel for an overnight stay.
As we drive deeper into the trans-Himalayan region, the landscape transforms dramatically. One of the highlights of the day is a visit to the remote Nako Village, home to the serene Nako Lake and surrounded by towering mountains.
We also explore Gue Village, which houses the naturally preserved mummy of Monk Sangha Tenzin. Discovered after an earthquake in 2004, this rare phenomenon continues to intrigue historians, archaeologists, and travelers from across the world.
After a day filled with exploration and photography, we arrive in Tabo and spend the evening at leisure.
Waking up amidst towering peaks, we begin our journey towards Kaza, the capital of Spiti Valley. En route, we visit the revered Tabo Monastery and the historic Kungri Monastery, built in 1330 and known for its sacred rituals and preserved Tibetan artwork.
We continue our drive through the picturesque Pin Valley and Mudh Village, surrounded by the Pin-Parvati ranges and rich in biodiversity, including rare species such as the snow leopard and Himalayan ibex.
Situated at an altitude of 11,890 feet along the Spiti River, Kaza serves as the cultural and commercial hub of the valley, making it an ideal base for explorers and adventurers alike.
Our exploration around Kaza includes a visit to the iconic Key (Kee) Monastery, the largest and oldest monastery in Spiti Valley. The monastery is renowned for its ancient murals, relics, thangka paintings, and sacred Buddhist scriptures.
We also visit the engineering marvel Chicham Bridge, standing tall at 13,500 feet and recognized as one of Asia’s highest bridges. The surrounding villages offer rare chances to spot wildlife such as the elusive snow leopard.
Additional highlights include Hikkim, home to the world’s highest post office; Komic, the highest village connected by a motorable road; and Langza, famous for its ancient marine fossils and the towering Buddha statue overlooking the valley.
As we near the conclusion of our expedition, we visit the breathtaking Chandra Taal, also known as the Moon Lake. This crescent-shaped high-altitude lake offers a tranquil setting to reflect on the journey before we begin our return.
Spiti Valley offers far more than towering mountains and rugged terrain — it offers transformation. Only by driving through its challenging roads can one truly experience the soul of Spiti. This self-drive expedition is carefully curated to bridge cultures, emotions, and landscapes.
